Brewing Company/Brewery: Yeastie Boys (Wellington/Auckland) – Brewed at Invercargill Brewery (In Invercargill funnily enough)
Style: Indian Pale Ale (with Earl Gray Tea)
Yeastie Boys are one of my favourite Brewing Companies in the world. Before I talk about this truly amazing beer I have to tell you that I produced a beer with Yeastie Boys – The Celia Wade Brown Ale. This is a coffee Brown Ale that was one of the Winners of the Clemmenger’s Wellington in a Pint Competition (just to cover off any possible bias). Which meant that Yeastie Boys had a tea beer and a coffee beer out at the same time, talk about covering your hot beverages in a beer. But I am not here to talk about my own beer I am here to review Gunnamatta. Gunnamatta won the People’s choice award at the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular in 2012. Yeastie Boys comprised of Stu McKinlay of Wellington and Sam Possenniskie of Auckland. Their beer is produced in Invercargill. Both have day jobs and work on Yeastie Boys in their spare time. Both know a lot about beer and brewing and are some of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

Gunnamatta (named after a Paul Kelly song) is an earl grey tea IPA. Instead of dry hopping, it is dry-leafed with earl grey blue flower tea. Firstly on the nose the earl grey tea really wafts from the glass. It has big orange and earl grey tea flavours which meld together in a sweet fruit forward beer with a nice dry, bitter finish. If you love earl grey tea, drink it. If you love IPAs drink it, if you love truly innovative and amazing beers, drink it. Just drink and let me know what you think. I don’t know if this is true but I am sure this beer has a nice dose of anti-oxidants in it. So have one and cheers to good health!
